Do you want to be a book reviewer? Write book reviews for local newspapers. Title - What does it suggest? Can you identify any limitations? Has the author ignored important aspects of the subject? Points to ponder as you read the entire book: Does the book fit?

From what point of view is the book written? Make notes as you read, passages to quote in your review. Suitable for the intended audience? Are concepts well defined? Compare the book to others by this author, or books in this field by other authors. Use the books listed in the bibliography. Include title, author, place, publisher, publication date, edition, pages, special features maps, etc. Hook the reader with your opening sentence.

Set the tone of the review. Some want you to say outright if you recommend a book, but not others. Review the book you read -- not the book you wish the author had written. If this is the best book you have ever read, say so -- and why. Include information about the author-- reputation, qualifications, etc. Use quotes or paraphrasing from the book to support your summary.

Evaluate and critique the book. Once you have summarized the book and discussed the main themes and aspects, shift into your critical analysis. This the heart of your review, so be as direct and clear as you can. Use the answers you brainstormed during your preparation for the review to formulate your critique.

This not only reinforces your viewpoint with a trustworthy source, it also gives the reader a sense of the writing style and narrative voice of the book. Wrap up the review. Write a concluding paragraph or several sentences that sum up your critical analysis of the book.

If your critical position has been well argued, the conclusion should follow naturally. A good review will flow well from introduction to summary to critical analysis, have an interesting perspective on the book, and be free of any grammatical or spelling errors to ensure it is easy to read. You should not specifically include the ending of a book in a book review. You can give general impressions about the ending, but actually writing the ending itself is considered a huge spoiler, and will likely turn a lot of people away from your reviews.
